But after playing for thirty minutes or so, I got the hang of it (sort of) and even landed a few beanbags into the hole. It was a surprisingly idyllic way to spend a Friday afternoon, tossing beanbags and footballs around with a nice breeze blowing through the trees. I do hope this nice weather stays as long as possible (guess Im a California boy at heart). Back on topic. That night, at 8:00, I went to Nightmarket. Nightmarket, hosted by the three biggest Asian cultural clubs on campus, mirrors the East Asian phenomenon of the nighttime street market, associated with pretty lights and tons of delicous food. MIT Nightmarket threw in a glorious slew of performances, ranging from Chinese yo-yo tricks to Western yo-yo tricks, Taiko drumming, Korean, drumming, traditional and contemporary performances by the esteemed MIT Asian Dance Team, an extremely colorful bhangra performance, and many more that Im sure Im forgetting. People came all the way from Harvard and Wellesley to attend and perform. It was wonderfully immersive and super-Asian; to tell the truth, I didnt expect to enjoy it quite as much as I did (my high school was and still is around 85% Asian), but Nightmarket was so well put-together and just generally a great time. Chemistry Tutor How to Tell if a Bond is Inter- or Intra-

If you can remember the difference between five James Bonds, you can definitely remember the difference between two molecular bonds. As you go over the material in your chemistry course or your SAT/AP test prep, you most certainly spend a lot of time learning about bonds—what they are, how they differ, how strong they are, and so forth. Also, you have probably read about them being classified into intramolecular bonds and intermolecular bonds. During my many one-on-one chemistry tutoring sessions, I have come to realize that students get very confused about the difference between these two groups. While it might seem like just a simple spelling issue, it is much more important than that. What kind of bonds we are talking about has a lot to do with the kind of chemistry that’s happening. So let’s define these categories: Intramolecular bonds: Think of these bonds as the bonds within. Intramolecular bonds form between atoms in a molecule. These bonds are very strong and take a lot of energy to break. Breaking this bonds results in the loss of identity of the molecule. For example, if you break the bonds between hydrogen and oxygen atoms in the water molecule, you no longer have water. These bonds give a molecule its identity. There are two kinds of intramolecular bonds-covalent and ionic. Covalent bonds- these bonds occur between atoms with similar electronegativity. This means that the electrons participating in the bond are shared (equally or unequally between the atoms). If the atoms in the bond have almost equal (or equal in the case of the same atoms) electronegativity, then the bond is a covalent nonpolar. These bonds usually occur in diatomic molecules, such as O2 or H2. If the atoms participating in the bond do not have the same electronegativity, but the difference is not greater than 2, then the bond is polar covalent. In this case the electrons of the bonds are not equally shared, but are pulled more toward the more electronegative atom. Be careful! If a molecule has a polar bond, it does not automatically follow that the molecule is polar. Polarity of the molecule has a lot to do with the geometry of the molecule, but that is a topic for another post. Ionic bonds- these bonds occur between atoms with an electronegativity difference greater than 2. As you might guess from the name, these bonds occur in the case of ionic compounds. Here, the electrons of the bond are completely sequestered by one atom, which has the negative charge. The other atom (or group) has a positive charge. Ionic bonds are very strong and they require a lot of energy to break. Actually, ionic bonds are in a sort of a gray area between intramolecular and intermolecular bonds. Since the electrons of the bond are completely sequestered by one atom, creating ions, there is no distinction between ions of the same molecule or ions of the nearby molecule. Ionic bonds are the strongest kind of intramolecular bonds as well as the strongest intermolecular bond (covered below). Intermolecular bonds: Think of these bonds as the bonds between. I usually tell my students to think of these as international relations (relations between nations, not within the same nation-nations being the molecules). These bonds occur between molecules and they are generally weaker than intramolecular bonds. Breaking these bonds only affects how close or far apart molecules are; it has nothing to do with the identity of the molecule. For instance, when you boil water, as you go from water to vapor you break the intermolecular bonds of water. In liquid molecules are close, but in vapor these bonds have been broken and thus molecules are further apart. However, as you go from liquid to vapor, the identity of the molecule, water, does not change. In either phase you still have water. These bonds are usually broken as you transition though phase changes. In fact, the strength of these bonds determines how much energy you need to transition from one phase to the other. A liquid with strong intermolecular bonds will require a lot of energy to transition from liquid to vapor and boil at a high temperature. Another liquid with weaker intermolecular bonds, with require less energy for the transition and therefore boil at a lower temperature. There are several intermolecular bonds and below I will list them in the order of decreasing strength. Ionic bonds- as mentioned before, these are the strongest kinds of bonds and they occur between ionic compounds. Ion-dipole-these bonds occur between an ionic compound and a polar molecule. Hydrogen bond-these are special kinds of bonds that occurs between two polar molecules. One of these molecules has a very electronegative atom, such as O, N or F, and the other molecule has a hydrogen atom bound to a very electronegative atom. Dipole-dipole-this occurs between two polar molecules. Dipole-induced Dipole-this occurs between a polar molecule and a non-polar molecule. Induced Dipole-Induced Dipole-this occurs between two non-polar molecules. In this study, participants used attributional inference to attribute traits. Given a story, participants were tasked to describe the character in their story using the extreme attitudes. There were two stories, one for each group. Each story had a different character that shows the attitudinal extremities. The two different characters was how political framing was manipulated in the study. Effect of IV on DV: Political Framing on Trait Attributes In a study done by Montiel and Shah the effects of political framing and the perceiver’s social position on trait attributions of a terrorist or freedom fighter was tested (Montiel Shah, 2008). By using a short description or story of either a terrorist or freedom fighter bombing a building, they were able to see if the framing had an effect on the attribution of traits they gave to the characters. Math Research Paper Since the 1980’s calculator use in the classroom has been a huge controversy between educators (Golden, 2000). It is becoming increasingly common to use calculators in the classroom on a regular basis. Some states allow students to use calculators on standardized tests and as part of the regular curriculum (Dion, 2001). Because we live in such a technologically changing world, hand held calculators have been far surpassed and can be purchased for as low as $4.00 each. This low price however, has not swayed the many people that believe calculators are not appropriate in the classroom. These critics argue that calculators take away student’s basic knowledge of mathematics, prevent children from truly†¦show more content†¦This evidence alone is enough proof, for some, that calculator use takes away basic skills and when given a test where these skills come into play, children do not perform well. It is believed that the difference in calculator use based on race and wealth may reinforce inequality in scholastic achievement, rather than narrow them (Golden, 2000). Because calculators are so cheap, in comparison with computers, most schools can afford to provide them for each student, therefore, this is the only technology readily available to low-income schools and calculators are often overused (Golden, 2000). In addition, another concern with calculators is that many children feel they are cheating, taking the easy way out, or taking and illegal shortcut by using a calculator. They think they are skipping out on the work and by doing so are bein g immoral (Dresdeck, 1999).
